First of all, sorry if this is the wrong section but I wasnt entirely sure on where to post this. Im an artist looking to get into 2D animation, with mesh deformation and bones to be precise, and Spine has caught my attention, mainly because there seems to be a healthy amount of tutorials around. I have a couple questions for the experts over here:

1.- Is Spine the right tool to use if I only want to animate sprites for videos? While I did work for an indie developer before Im currently interested in animating only videos for now, make the portfolio grow.

2.-If so, would I need an additional tool besides Spine? My desired end result is something similar to the animated sprites seen in gacha games for example.

I have contemplated using stuff like Live2D but it lacks english tutorials and the monthly sub is not looking too hot either, Spine looks by far the best tool but Im still on the fence on this, like if its for videogame only it may be a screw up on my part. Thanks in advance.

Welcome on the forum!

  1. Sure you can animate videos only with Spine too! with the new export settings this has become much more manageable so you shouldn't have major problems (:

  2. It depends, if you only want to make portfolio pieces perhaps not. If you want to stitch different animations together, add particles or other video effects, then you might find comfortable to also use specific software like Premiere, After Effects or the likes of it. It's not necessary but it's convenient for these cases.

You can totally do gacha-like animations! (I quite like the genre btw so please post them if you start doing them!) Even better, you can also make them interactive: Owl example
If you have Wallpaper Engine, you can download a little project I made that showcases this as well: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1848270557

Have a look at this page too! Spine: Twitch There are some parts dedicated to exploring export settings (just search "export" inside the page to find the specific parts where this is brought up!)

Thats amazing, thanks for the links and insight, I will give Spine a try right away.
